3098 Luba masks are rare and are primarily found in eastern Luba kingdom. The Luba kifwebe mask was adopted from the Songye model, probably in the early years of the twentieth century. It tends to be entirely domed, with no prominent features, and followed the Songye striations convention but in a concentric manner. Unfortunately, little is known about the symbolism of the Luba masks. They appeared in pairs at important occasions as the death of chief, and at rituals in honor of the ancestors (D. Newton 2001)
